The melodrama “Pretty Woman” has an unusual history. In the early eighties, a 28-year-old aspiring screenwriter Jonathan Frederick Laughton came to Los Angeles to “conquer Hollywood”
One day he met a woman, who told him the story of her friend - a youthful beautiful girl, who worked in one of the New York escort agencies. Once she was hired for a week by a young successful businessman to play his wife and accompany him at receptions and informal meetings to make a favorable impression on important business partners.
In addition to the agency rate, he promised the girl to pay her three thousand dollars, if she would do everything right. It was a serious sum for such work that time. Moreover, she didn’t have to do anything special, just attend social events and restaurants with him. On top of that, the businessman bought her posh outfits and treated her with respect, even when they were alone.
During those days, while the girl was playing a wife, everything seemed to her so real, that she fell in love with the businessman and supposed, that their feelings were mutual. According to the the contract, she didn't have to provide him with intimate services, but one evening they had intimacy at the initiative of the girl herself.
When the guy finished his business in New York, he gave the girl the promised three thousand dollars, said goodbye in cold blood and almost forcibly dropped her out of the car. But before that, he “brought her down from heaven to earth”, harshly having explained to her, who she really is.
The ending of the story was tragic. The girl didn't take the money and silently left. And a day after she committed a suicide, realizing, that she did not have the future, that she had planned for herself, and she could no longer live in the old way.
Jonathan wrote the script in a week, having focused on the cost of his heroine's dream. And there was a warning for such young girls about the hopelessness of such a life choice.
The script was bought by the Walt Disney company, but on the condition, that the dark drama in the art-house style would be turned into a cheerful comedy with a happy ending. In the script almost everything was left as it is, except for the ending, in which the main character proposed to the heroine.
This ending radically changed the author's intentions. Instead of warning and condemning hooking activity, this film, on the contrary, romanticizes escort.
As for me, I would take money and happily evaporate from the guy's reality, sending him my gratitude distantly and silently via subtle matter of the universe, because, when you play in love with a sociopath, you must be reasonable and control your feelings hard to win financially and avoid a mental harm. For sure, the guy wasn't a self-made, but just a suit, who involved himself in a wife-having game to impress partners, at the same time having a second thought - to assert himself at the expense of an emotionally vulnerable prostitute. Yes, sometimes we fall in love with clients, because we are not a soulless androids, but the happy end of such love is so rare, that must be included in the Red Book. Happily for me, I am really actually an introvert, who prefers rare love escapes with mandatory return to my eternal solitude after intimate moments. Love you all, guys.)
